In accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), we report and publish our greenhouse gas emissions under Scopes 1, 2 and 3.
We document our measures, targets and progress in a transparent and verifiable manner.

Scope 1

Covers all direct greenhouse gas emissions from our company that result directly from our operational activities.

This includes emissions from:

  • Stationary combustion
  • Mobile combustion
  • Fugitive emissions

Scope 2

This includes indirect greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the generation of the electricity purchased by our company.

We report Scope 2 emissions in accordance with the GHG Protocol on both a market-based and a site-based basis.
As we purchase certified green electricity, our market-based Scope 2 emissions amount to 0 t CO₂. The site-based figure, which reflects the average emissions of the electricity grid, is also reported.
These include emissions from:

  • Purchased electricity

Scope 3

Covers all other indirect greenhouse gas emissions generated throughout our upstream and downstream value chain.

Upstream emissions:

  • Purchased goods and services
  • Capital goods
  • Fuel and energy supply chains, including transmission and distribution losses
  • Upstream transport and logistics
  • Operational waste generation and wastewater treatment
  • Business travel and hotel stays
  • Employee commuting and remote working

 

Downstream emissions:

  • Transport and logistics of products sold
  • Use of products sold
  • Disposal of products sold

Emissions reduction targets

Bürkle has defined science-based climate targets that are consistent with the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement.
These have been officially validated by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

Using 2023 as the base year, we will reduce our absolute greenhouse gas emissions in Scopes 1 and 2 by 42 per cent by 2030. 

Scope 3 emissions are fully accounted for and systematically analysed. Relevant emission sources along the value chain are being gradually reduced.

*The temporary increase in location-based Scope 2 emissions is due to the electrification of our heat supply. By replacing fossil fuels, we are sustainably reducing our direct emissions and making our energy supply fit for the future.

In addition to our science-based climate targets, we pursue further binding environmental targets, particularly in the areas of waste management and hazardous substances management. These targets are firmly embedded in our environmental policy, which is publicly available.

Reduction measures

Our emissions reductions are based on the gradual decarbonisation of our energy supply and mobility structure.

Energy & heating (Scope 1 & 2)

  • Gradual conversion of the heating supply from heating oil to energy-efficient heat pump technology
  • Use of 100% certified renewable electricity
  • On-site electricity generation through a photovoltaic system
  • Heat recovery from production processes
  • Energy-efficient building improvements, including windows, insulation, LED lighting and motion sensors

 

Mobility (Scope 1)

  • Gradual transition of the passenger vehicle fleet to electric mobility
  • On-site charging infrastructure

In addition to our climate-related reduction measures, we are committed to other areas of environmental and resource protection. These measures are firmly embedded in our environmental management system and are continuously being developed further.

Sustainability - Environment

Compensatory measures

Despite consistent reduction measures, it is not possible to completely avoid all greenhouse gas emissions. We offset any remaining emissions by supporting certified climate protection projects.
This offsetting is carried out in addition to our reduction measures and does not count towards the achievement of our science-based climate targets.
